If Phil Ivey is sometimes called the Tiger Woods of poker, Phil Hellmuth just might be the John McEnroe of poker. Most poker observers agree that it’s unfortunate that Phil Hellmuth might end up remembered more for his outbursts than for his exceptional tournament play. His Web site pays a passing mention to this legacy, stating that he is working on an autobiography entitled “Poker Brat”.Phil was born in Madison, Wisconsin and went to college there. It was in college that he first fell into playing poker. After three years of college, he made the big move to drop out and play poker professionally. In 1989, he won the main event at the World Series of Poker. As he was 24, he became the youngest player at the time to win such a prestigious honor. In addition to traveling the country playing in high-profile buy-in tournaments, Phil also has an instruction video (“Phil Hellmuth’s Million Dollar Poker System”) and book (“Play Poker Like the Pros.) out. His latest book, “Bad Beats and Lucky Draws”, is due to hit the shelves soon. He’s a spokesman for http://www .UltimateBet.com and has worked with Summus to put out a Texas Hold’em game for cell phones. This is fitting since Phil is himself a family man, living in Palo Alto with his wife Kathy and their two sons, Phillip and Nicholas. Phil’s notable poker accomplishments include the following: · Second place on the All-Time Money list with $4,722,451 · Nine World Series of Poker bracelets. · Five Hall of Fame of Poker Tournament wins. · Won the World’s Biggest Seven-Card Stud tournament in Austria. · Has finished in the top-ten in the World Poker Tour five times.
